PRK / ASA
Why would I have Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK)?
No more glasses!! This is what laser eye surgery is best known for. A Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK) or Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) is a procedure that reshapes your cornea to eliminate your need for glasses. With the Alcon Contoura treatment offered by our doctors, many patients will achieve better vision without glasses than they previously had in glasses or contact lenses.
Your laser will be performed at South Bank Day Hospital. This is the only place in Queensland where excimer laser eye surgery is performed in an accredited private hospital.
As the laser is performed in a hospital you can have your procedure performed with an anaesthetist present to give you a twilight anaesthetic if you wish.
Our doctors believe that laser eye surgery should be performed in the safest way possible. When Dr Cronin had his laser eye surgery he chose to have a PRK instead of LASIK due to its superior safety profile.
The procedure costs
$2300 for one eye
$4500 for both eyes
$2800 for one eye
$5000 for both eyes
What is involved in the Refractive Laser Eye Surgery?
In a PRK, the surface layer of cells in the eye called epithelium are removed with either a laser or by using alcohol to assist in wiping them off. The laser then reshapes your cornea to remove your need for glasses. The procedure goes very quickly, in total it takes less than 5 minutes per eye but the laser only goes for a few seconds. A special bandage contact lens is placed on your eye to make it more comfortable and assist healing. This is removed a few days after the procedure. You will be on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for a few weeks.
